Transpower's response to the Authority's immediate assurance review of the 9 August 2021 demand management event

The Authority welcomes Transpower’s response to the Authority’s Immediate assurance review of the 9 August 2021 demand management event.

We are pleased Transpower have taken on board the recommendations outlined in the Authority’s phase one review published on 10 September 2021. We will now work closely with Transpower to ensure the recommendations are implemented. 

The Authority’s phase one review sought immediate assurance that any systemic and process issues associated with the system operator’s demand allocation decision support tool and communications surrounding the event have been corrected.

Consultation closes today: Improving competition and innovation on distribution networks 

Distribution networks have an important role to play in supporting New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions economy. 

As the country transitions, electrification of transport and process heat will create a substantial increase in electricity demand going through distribution networks. 

Consumers will use more distributed energy resources (DER) and there will be more connections to the grid. A cost benefit analysis conducted by Sapere estimated the potential benefits for DER to be around $7 billion over the next 30 years.

The Authority is looking at a range of potential issues on distribution networks and potential regulatory options that may be needed to support New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions economy and ensure long-term benefits to consumers.

Electricity Authority and system operator joint development programme update

The Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010 (Code) requires the Authority and the system operator (Transpower) to agree and publish a joint development programme at least annually. Updates to the programme were agreed in August 2021. These changes reflect progress, changes to priorities, and other project agreements that have occurred since the last publication.
