Logo updated in guidelines for raising consumer awareness of Utilities Disputes and Powerswitch service

On 1 April 2021 a Code amendment takes effect which requires retailers and distributors to raise awareness of Utilities Disputes and Powerswitch in certain situations.

To improve usability, Consumer NZ is planning to launch a refreshed look and feel of the Powerswitch website. This refresh includes an updated Powerswitch logo.

The Authority has updated Appendix A in its guidelines to help retailers and distributors prepare for the Code change. The updated guidelines show the new Powerswitch logo in visual examples of a website, bill and correspondence. There have been no other changes to the guidelines.

The Authority recognises that retailers are already making changes to raise consumer awareness of Powerswitch ahead of the 1 April 2021 implementation date. The Authority encourages retailers to use the updated logo as soon as reasonably possible and before 2 June 2021.

The updated Powerswitch logo and more information is available directly from Consumer NZ

Reminder: Services contract opportunity for commercial market making

The Authority has released a Request for Information (RFI) to help inform key decisions regarding the establishment of a commercial market making scheme for New Zealand Electricity Futures contracts.

The RFI outlines the design of the commercial scheme and seeks feedback on assumptions and aspects requiring further development.

It is important that market making services support a robust forward price curve and enable efficient risk management for the long-term benefit of consumers.

The Authority would like to hear from potential commercial scheme service providers - parties interested in providing commercial market making services under the commercial scheme. Respondents’ feedback will be considered as we set up a commercial scheme that efficiently meets the needs of New Zealand electricity consumers.

The RFI closes at 5pm NZT on 12 March 2021 and is listed on GETS.govt.nz the New Zealand Government’s procurement portal.

Reminder: Electricity Authority and Transpower joint briefing on information disclosure – tomorrow

The Authority and Transpower are holding a joint briefing on information disclosure from 10am-12pm tomorrow.

In January, the Authority announced a decision to amend the Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010 (Code) to improve the availability of thermal fuel information. The Code amendment which comes into force on 1 April 2021 imposes obligations on major participants (a newly defined term), to report to the Authority on how they are meeting their disclosure obligations under clause 13.2A of the Code.

The Authority will provide an overview of these new rules. Transpower will provide an update on new guidance for participants on what outages might impact the system operator’s ability to meet its Principal Performance Obligations.

We encourage all participants who will be affected by the Code amendment to attend. Please email WMID@ea.govt.nz to register your interest in attending in person or by video conference.
