From 1 July 2021, the consumer care guidelines will replace:
- the guideline on arrangements to assist vulnerable consumers; and
- the guideline on arrangements to assist medically dependent consumers; and
- the addendum to the medically dependent consumer guideline and vulnerable consumer guideline.
As stated in Part 10 of the guidelines, by 31 July 2021 retailers should provide the Authority with an initial ‘alignment plan’ that sets out how and when they will align their processes and practices with the consumer care guidelines. Further details on ongoing monitoring recommendations are also contained in Part 10 of the guidelines.
Retailers are expected to fully align with the guidelines by 31 December 2021.

Susan Paterson steps down from Electricity Authority Board
|
|
Susan Paterson has resigned as a long-standing Board member of the Electricity Authority.
Susan has been a professional director since 1996 including listed, SOE and private companies. She spent two years with the Wholesale Electricity Market Development Group, (establishing the electricity market), served on the Board of Transpower for 8.5 years and has served on the Authority’s Board since its inception in 2010.
Susan has been instrumental in steering the Authority through a decade of significant change. Innovation and technology have transformed the electricity sector and the way in which consumers interact with the system. Over the past ten years the Authority has introduced a range of reforms to support the industry to navigate change while holding industry to account on behalf of New Zealand's electricity consumers.
The result has been more choice for consumers, improved security of supply, more efficient energy prices and significant investment in renewable generation.
The Authority has greatly benefited from Susan’s extensive director experience, industry knowledge and business acumen. Her contribution to the Authority’s regulatory stewardship has been invaluable and Susan leaves the Authority well placed to continue to steer the electricity industry through the transition to a low emissions economy.
The Authority wishes Susan all the best for the future.

Reminder: commercial market-making scheme: levy consultation
|
|
The Authority is consulting on changes to the Electricity Industry Levy to support the implementation of a commercial market-making scheme. The commercial scheme is part of the Authority’s long-term approach to market making, which involves a deliberate transition, over several years, to commercial providers.
The consultation is open until Tuesday 22 June and seeks feedback on the preferred level of service from the commercial scheme and the impact this has on the levy on industry participants.
The Authority will make an informed decision about the establishment of the commercial scheme supported by stakeholder feedback and work collectively with all key parties to support the best outcome for consumers.
If you would like to discuss the proposal in person please contact commercialmarketmaking@ea.govt.nz
