Strategy reset 2020 - new strategy released

We have reset the Electricity Authority’s strategy in response to the ongoing and rapid changes in the electricity sector.

Five sector ambitions focus us to ensure electricity regulation creates a platform for economic recovery, accelerating growth and wider long-term benefit for New Zealand.

Our ambitions reflect a collective call to action for and by the sector. They have been developed in consultation with staff, the Board and many of our key stakeholders including direct engagement with consumers.

Our new strategy is set out in our Statement of Intent 2020-2024. It contains more detail on the key components of the strategic framework, priority actions we will take and how we are going to measure our progress.

Thank you to everyone who provided insight and feedback during the strategy development process. We have published a document which summarises and reflects how this feedback influenced our final strategic framework and priority actions.

Draft decision paper: Top Energy application for exemption from corporate separation and arm's-length rules

Top Energy has applied for an exemption from corporate separation and arm’s-length rules in relation to 17.87 MW of diesel generators on its network. The diesel generators are intended to support reliability on Top Energy’s network.

Under section 90 of the Act, the Authority can grant exemptions from such requirements. The Authority can only grant exemptions if it considers that the application will support or at least not inhibit competition.

The Authority seeks feedback on a draft decision that grants an exemption subject to certain conditions that support competition in the network support services market. The proposed exemption would be granted for 365 days to provide Top Energy with time to meet the other conditions of the exemption.

The draft decision paper is available on our website.

HME market making submission

In April 2020 the Authority published a consultation paper Hedge Market Enhancements: Ensuring market making arrangements are fit-for-purpose over time, and invited stakeholder views on the most appropriate approach.

Submissions closed on 16 June, and the 17 submissions received were published on our website.  A further submission has been received from NZ Steel, and has been added to our website.
