Hedge Market Development: Enhancing trading of hedge products consultation paper

We have published submissions on the Hedge Market Development Enhancing trading of hedge products consultation paper, which sought views on market making arrangements for New Zealand electricity products traded on ASX. We will use these submissions to undertake further investigation and analysis to form the basis of a report to the Authority Board.

Demand response guiding regulatory principles

We have published an information paper that sets out the principles that we believe should apply to demand response initiatives in the New Zealand electricity sector.

We welcome feedback, which should be sent to submissions@ea.govt.nz with ‘Demand response guiding regulatory principles’ in the subject line.

Feedback should be received by 23 September 2015.

Professor Stephen Littlechild ‘Top of the regulatory pops’ video available

We recently hosted Professor Stephen Littlechild in Wellington. Professor Littlechild was previously a member of the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission, the Director General of Electricity Supply, and the Head of the Office of Electricity Regulation (Offer) from 1989 to 1998. He was also part of the Caygill Inquiry that recommended the establishment of an independent electricity regulator for New Zealand. He delivered a stakeholder lecture which assessed various UK regulatory initiatives to check how they reduced regulatory burden while increasing regulatory certainty. His findings were fairly mixed. A video of this presentation is now available.

Introductory training course for registry users

We are considering running one day, hands-on training courses for registry users in early September 2015. These courses would be repeats of the courses previously run in June and August 2014. The course is suitable for new registry users, people wanting to gain some knowledge on the operation of the registry, or existing users who wish to manage an ICP through all participant stages.

We are seeking expressions of interest from people interested in attending.  Depending on the level of interest, we will run courses in both Auckland and Wellington; otherwise there will just be a single course in Wellington. Attendance numbers may need to be limited, as the course requires us to set up individual workstations for registry access.

If you are interested in attending this course, please email your name and contact details to: marketoperations@ea.govt.nz with ‘September 2015 registry training’ in the subject line by Wednesday, 19 August 2015. Course dates, timing and venue details will be confirmed after we have considered the responses received.
