Our role in the electricity industry
Our main statutory objective is to promote competition, ensure that there’s a reliable supply of electricity and to promote the efficient operation of the electricity industry, for the long-term benefit of consumers. Our additional objective is to protect the interests of domestic consumers and small business consumers in relation to the supply of electricity to those customers.
As an independent Crown entity, we provide regulatory oversight of the electricity sector.
Our work is focused on addressing key questions that affect the long-term benefit of consumers.

- Will the lights stay on?
- Do consumers have choices?
- Is innovation occurring?
Electricity Market Information
EMI is short for Electricity Market Information. It is a website containing a wide range of information and data we collect as part of our industry and market monitoring such as retailer market share, monthly switching reports and wholesale final pricing.
To answer these questions we:
- develop, administer and enforce the Electricity Industry Participation Code (the Code), which is a set of rules that govern nearly every aspect of New Zealand’s electricity industry including generation, transmission, system operation, security of supply, market arrangements, metering, distribution and retail
- support the development of the industry through education, guidelines, information and model arrangements
- monitor the industry and make information available through the EMI website(external link)
- contract a range of service providers to operate our electricity market and system as set out in the Code.
