A Grid Upgrade Plan (GUP) was a plan, prepared by Transpower and submitted to the Electricity Commission, to upgrade the high-voltage transmission network, or national grid, that transmits electricity throughout the country.
Documents and information relating to the 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009 grid upgrade plans can be found on this page.
A GUP submitted to the Electricity Commission, contained, among other things:
- A comprehensive plan for asset management and operation of the grid;
- Information on investment contracts (contracts for grid investments that are agreed between Transpower and one of its customers); and
- Investment plans split into economic investments and reliability investments.
Reliability investments are investments in the grid, or alternative arrangements, by Transpower that are primarily to reduce expected unserved energy. They needed to be justified against the grid reliability standards (GRS).
Economic investments are investments that passed the grid investment test (GIT) and were not reliability investments.
