11 September - What's My Number review: Competition is key
The Electricity Authority has released its latest report on What’s My Number, Competition is key - a review of the 2012 campaign.
The Authority’s second review of the campaign since it launched in May 2011 shows consumers’ propensity to compare and switch retailers remains high.
“More New Zealanders than ever before have shopped around for a better electricity deal, contributing to wider change in the retail electricity market for the benefit of all consumers,” said Electricity Authority Chief Executive, Carl Hansen.
“The more that people are aware they can easily switch electricity retailers, the stronger the competition among retailers,” Carl Hansen said.
The report contains a number of highlights, specifically revealing that:
- Since the launch in 2011, almost 780,000 New Zealanders have shopped around for a better electricity deal.
- During 2012, there were 24,209 additional switches over those recorded prior to What’s My Number in 2010.
- Kiwis saved an estimated $4.24 million through switching in 2012.
- Consumers surveyed during 2012 had a high propensity to switch, with 82% realising they can switch suppliers, 73% saying it is worthwhile reviewing electricity providers and 70% agreeing it is easy to switch.
The report gives a round-up of 16 regions around New Zealand. These are summarised in the document.
